Kapitel is developing a year-round open-air complex of outdoor swimming pools on the Kalasadama 5 and 7 properties by the sea next to Linnahall in Tallinn. The centre will include heated outdoor pools, various saunas, a restaurant, flexible event spaces and outdoor terraces. The centre will be operated by Nordic Urban, a Finnish company that runs a similar centre in Helsinki, Allas Sea Pool.
In addition to the buildings, we will create a new 200-metre illuminated, landscaped and furnished promenade, which will be available for everyone. We also plan to revamp the entire Kalasadama quay and its surroundings.
A total of 13 designs participated in the public architecture competition. The winning entry “Fishermans Wharf” by Architect Must focuses on the historical atmosphere of the fishing port, creating a complete public space around the quays and promenade of different heights, merged with outdoor pools and restaurant terraces, above which the harbour building with its recognisable silhouette is enthroned.
Kalasadama projects are located in a unique seaside location, in the city centre and in the immediate vicinity of the Old Town. The neighbours of the properties include the legendary Linnahall, Creative Hub, housed in the early 20th century refurbished power station, the contemporary art museum and fi sh market. Nearby is the UNESCO listed Tallinn Old Town, the passenger and cruise ship terminals, as well as the area next to the Admiralty Pool, which is currently under development. The Kalasadama area is transforming into a human-centric urban space, with the new tram line, opened in 2024, also improving public transport access. The city of Tallinn is crafting a new vision for the waterfront area, as part of which Kalasadama Street will be relocated, creating more room for pedestrian traffi c and landscaping while diverting vehicular traffi c away from the waterfront. Five streets in the city centre would extend to the sea and the legendary Linnahall will be transformed into a modern conference and concert centre.
