Kapitel launches architectural competition for Kalasadama Street seaside properties

Kapitel has announced an open-call architectural competition to find the best architectural solution for planning buildings on 5, 5a, 7, 7a and 7b Kalasadama Street, along with a promenade in Tallinn. Kapitel’s goal is to establish a public urban space with diverse services, including a complex of open-air swimming pools, a restaurant, a marina and a market. The competition area spans 7,500 sq m, and the deadline for entries is 15 February 2024.

“The Kalasadam area is transforming into a human-centric urban space. The city is crafting a new vision for the waterfront area surrounding Linnahall. As part of this initiative, Kalasadama Street will be relocated, creating more room for pedestrian traffic and landscaping while diverting vehicular traffic away from the waterfront. The introduction of a new tram line will also improve public transport access,” stated Kapitel’s Development Director, Martin Rebane.

“With the development of properties on 5 and 7 Kalasadama Street, we can contribute as a private company to the improvement of public urban spaces. We are giving the seaside promenade to the city to ensure around-the-clock accessibility for everyone. To link the Linnahall area with Noblessner and the extended seaside region via Kalaranna Street, we plan to construct a new 200-metre illuminated, landscaped and furnished promenade. Additionally, we plan to revamp the Kalasadama quay and its surroundings. Our plans for the building include a variety of services for city residents and tourists, such as a complex of open-air swimming pools, a restaurant, a cafe, a market, and facilities for servicing ships and boats visiting the marina. Negotiations with service operators are currently underway,” added Martin Rebane.

The terms of the architectural competition have been coordinated with the Estonian Association of Architects and the Tallinn Urban Planning Department. The competition jury comprises five members, including representatives from the developer, the city of Tallinn and architects.
